Why custom development instead of WordPress?+
Honestly? Sometimes WordPress is still the right answer — if you have an internal marketing team that already knows it, or a plugin ecosystem you can’t leave, we’ll build there. But for most home-improvement contractors, WordPress means 30+ plugins, monthly security babysitting, and a 4-second load time on mobile. Custom Next.js means one codebase, automatic updates, Lighthouse 95+, and no plugin tax. The right question isn’t “WordPress vs. custom” — it’s “what does the site need to do, and what’s the cheapest way to get there over five years.” For sites doing real work (quotes, calculators, integrations, dashboards), custom wins on five-year cost almost every time.
How long does a custom build take?+
Eight to fourteen weeks for most home-improvement builds. The big variables: how many custom features (calculator, multi-step form, portal — each is roughly 1–2 weeks), how many integrations (CRM, booking system, accounting), and how clean your existing content is. We can ship in six weeks if you’re replacing a Squarespace site with copy ready to go. Fourteen if we’re building from scratch with a custom calculator and a service-area system across 20 cities.
Will we own the code?+
Yes — fully. The code lives in your GitHub. The Sanity CMS is on your account. The hosting (Vercel) is on your account. The domain is on your registrar. If you fire us tomorrow, you walk away with everything and any competent Next.js developer can pick it up the next day. This is the opposite of what Wix, Squarespace, or proprietary contractor-website platforms offer — when you leave them, your site dies.
What if your agency leaves?+
Three answers: (1) Everything is in standard tools — Next.js, Sanity, Vercel — that any developer on Earth can pick up. (2) Every build ships with a written handoff doc: architecture map, env vars, CMS guide, deploy runbook. (3) We don’t lock you in. You can stay on retainer for ongoing dev, or move to your in-house team, or bring in another agency. The code, content, and integrations are yours.
Can we A/B test on a custom site as easily as WordPress?+
Easier. We wire Vercel’s built-in feature flags + edge middleware on every build, so you can run A/B tests at the edge with zero JavaScript penalty. Or plug in GrowthBook, Statsig, or Optimizely if you prefer. The WordPress A/B “solution” is usually a plugin that injects render-blocking JS and slows the site by 800ms — we avoid that entirely. Run as many tests as you want without breaking Core Web Vitals.
